Our work environment

DEEWR provides a professional work environment where high performance is encouraged and rewarded. The department enjoys a good reputation across the Australian Public Service, and is a well respected organisation in the field of public policy and administration. DEEWR is attractive for its flexible employment conditions, competitive pay, approach to work and family matters, diversity in the workplace and access to a wide range of assistance and allowances for staff.

Work & personal

We work in an environment where employees with family responsibilities are able to exercise the right to fulfil these responsibilities with minimum conflict between employment and family and without being subject to discrimination.

Under the Certified Agreement or a negotiated Agency Workplace Agreement, the following may be available to assist staff to help them to balance their work and personal lives. Some of the arrangements may include:

  • regular part-time work
  • working from home
  • purchased leave, which allows staff to purchase leave that may be used to fulfil family commitments/responsibilities
  • maternity and paternity leave
  • availability of family rooms
  • access to other leave, including personal leave, bereavement leave, long service leave and annual leave
  • confidential access to the department’s Employee Assistance Program

Diversity

We work in an environment that supports fully and promotes workplace diversity. We recognise and value diversity by respecting our differences and reflecting this in the way we work and treat each other. Recognising differences ensures that we understand that one approach may not be appropriate for all.

Through valuing our diversity we can achieve better outcomes for ourselves and our clients, partners and stakeholders:

  • for individuals this includes improved job satisfaction and commitment through greater opportunity for participation in decision-making together with the flexibility to better balance work and personal commitments.

We value a workplace that is free from discrimination and harassment, and ensures that employment decisions are based on merit.

The department promotes these values and strategies through the implementation of its Workplace Diversity Strategy, Work and personal policy and Workplace Harassment policy.
