Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans

To support Australian Apprentices to meet everyday costs while they undertake their training, eligible apprentices will be able to apply for Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans. These loans provide up to $25,983 (for 2025-26) in total and are paid monthly in arrears.

On this page:

Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans are available to eligible apprentices to assist with everyday costs while completing their apprenticeship.

Apprentices will not have to repay the loans until they are earning an income above the minimum repayment threshold ($67,000 for 2025-26). Indexation of your loan will be capped at the lower of the Wage Price Index or the Consumer Price Index.

Apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeship will receive a 20% discount on their loan amount.

Repayment of AASL is becoming fairer and more affordable. Australian Apprentices who have an outstanding debt as at 1 June 2025 will receive a one-off 20% reduction. The government is also introducing a ‘marginal repayment system’ where compulsory repayments are calculated only on income above the minimum repayment threshold.

Apprentices will not need to do anything to receive the 20% reduction. The ATO will backdate the changes to 1 June 2025 before the annual indexation was applied. This means that the ATO will also adjust the indexation that was applied to the apprentice’s debt, and indexation will only be applied to the lower debt amount.
