ParentsNext helped Marissa start her own business

ParentsNext – An Australian Government Initiative – Marissa's Story

This story was first published on Tuesday 21 November 2023. If you wish to use this content, please contact to confirm that the information is still current.

Marissa is a single mum, whose dream was to have her own photography business.

Before starting in ParentsNext, Marissa was struggling with a range of personal challenges. She also lacked support to move forward to pursue her career goals.

Marissa’s ParentsNext consultants, Kalisha and Kareen from AXIS Employment, guided her through the process of reaching her goals. They gave her personal support, so she felt comfortable sharing her story.

Kalisha and Karren directed Marissa to a local employment services provider that offered Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance (SEA). Through SEA, Marissa was able to enrol in a Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business.

Marissa successfully completed the course and went on to start a photography business. Her ParentsNext consultants further supported her using the Participation Fund to pay for her business expenses, such as a Working with Children’s Check and Police Check.

Marissa’s photography business has gone from strength to strength, with involvement in major local community events including the Fringe Festival. Marissa has achieved her dream and she is excited for her business to grow and succeed.

“The ParentsNext Program was always warm and welcoming towards myself and my son. The program offered great opportunities and support for my mental health and my business. Kalisha and Karren have always been more than happy to help me when I’ve come to them with a problem,” said Marissa.
