Kerri

Kerri joined the SEE Program with the goal of enhancing her computer skills. She wanted to master essential tasks such as navigating websites, sending emails, conducting online research and using basic word processing programs.
Initially, Kerri was hesitant and doubted her ability to learn how to use a computer. However, as she progressed through the digital units in the SEE Program, her confidence grew.
Throughout her time in the program, Kerri not only improved her digital skills but also excelled, particularly in typing. Her newfound abilities empowered her to help fellow students with tasks such as logging in and accessing MyGov, showcasing just how far she had come.
Inspired by her success, Kerri is now considering becoming a student mentor and even a volunteer for the SEE Program, eager to support others on their learning journeys.

Laila and Ann
Organisation: SMYL Community Services
State/Territory of training: Perth, WA
Ann was working as a teacher's assistant and felt nervous about using computers. Laila, originally from Somalia, has lived in Australia for 17 years and had limited English skills.
Both joined the SEE Program with different goals. Ann wanted to build her confidence and skills in using computers, while Laila aimed to learn English.
One day in class, Laila shared that she had never read a book from start to finish. Ann, an avid reader, encouraged her to give it a try and asked about her interests. Based on their conversation, Ann recommended a short and suitable book. Laila embraced the challenge and is now halfway through it. Laila said:
“Having a mix of English and non-English speaking students inspired me to improve my English skills.”
The learning has gone both ways. Laila shared her cultural cooking skills with Ann, who successfully made a traditional Somali rice dish and brought it to class to share.
Ann and Laila have formed a wonderful friendship, showing that learning happens not only in the classroom but also through connection and shared experiences beyond it.

Milad
Organisation: AMES Australia
State/Territory of training: Melbourne, VIC
Milad is a young refugee from Afghanistan who previously studied a Bachelor of Business Administration before resettling in Australia.
After arriving in Australia, Milad enrolled in the SEE Program. The program offered Milad a work placement opportunity with a company specialising in Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning products.
The work placement gave Milad valuable hands-on experience of the Australian workplace environment, helping him build his professional networks and skills. When Milad completed his study with SEE, he successfully landed a job.
SEE helped Milad pursue a meaningful career in Australia, by helping him pave the way to new opportunities. Milad is now pursuing a diploma in Artificial Intelligence, which aligns with his passion for technology.
“It was valuable to learn about the English used in Australia and to gain knowledge about how to get a job in Australia.”

JD
Organisation: Career Employment Australia
State/Territory of training: Dalby, QLD
After her children had grown up, JD found herself unemployed and ready for a new chapter. She began applying for jobs, eager to re-join the workforce, but faced repeated setbacks. Determined to move forward, JD decided to enrol in the SEE Program to boost both her confidence and her employability prospects.
JD was pleasantly surprised by how much she enjoyed training and was particularly excited about the business course available through SEE. She gained new skills and refreshed the ones she already had, growing more confident with each step.
Through the SEE Program, JD discovered an opportunity to pursue a business course. This experience inspired her to take a bold step and start her own coffee and food trailer business.
Now, JD is excited about the future and looks forward to seeing where her new venture will take her.

Mariam and Hieu
Organisation: TAFE QLD
State/Territory of training: Brisbane, QLD
Mariam and Hieu come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. They both joined the SEE Program with the goal of improving their English language and employability skills.
As part of their SEE training, Mariam and Hieu were offered a work experience placement at a local toy library, a not-for-profit organisation that lends toys and games to children and families. This opportunity allowed them to apply their existing skills while developing new ones gained through the program. Work experience is an integral component of TAFE Queensland’s First Steps to Work SEE course, which is designed to facilitate the development of concrete workplace skills beyond the traditional classroom setting.
During their time at the toy library, Mariam and Hieu grew in confidence and capability. The experience played a key role in their learning journey, helping them build practical workplace skills in a real-world setting beyond the classroom.

Donald
Organisation: Vocational Training Services
State/Territory of training: Broome, WA
Donald is a First Nations man who joined the SEE Program to learn computer skills in order to help him find employment.
During his time in the program, Donald became more and more confident using a computer, creating documents, writing emails and navigating the internet.
Donald showed strong commitment to the SEE Program and made impressive progress in his learning. Donald’s passion for the program inspired him to create a flyer with his newfound skills, to encourage more members of the community to join.
Throughout his time at SEE, Donald also enjoyed preparing food and cooking for his classmates. His inspiring progress and networking skills eventually landed him an opportunity working full-time as a cook. Donald joined the program with the goal of improving his computer skills and enhancing his cooking abilities. He has now achieved both.

Guy
Organisation: MAX Solutions
State/Territory of training: Midland, WA
After becoming unemployed, Guy was unsure what direction to take in his career. He was a mature age participant, quite short on confidence, with significant gaps in several areas, notably digital literacy and numeracy.
Guy enrolled in the SEE Program to build his employability skills. Guy began to thrive, especially in group settings where his participation steadily increased and his confidence grew. He grew more comfortable contributing to discussions and collaborating with others in the classroom.
Guy was able to complete writing exercises with both speed and accuracy. He responded thoughtfully to questions and found enjoyment in the interactive and supportive learning environment.
Since participating in the program, Guy’s confidence has grown. He has taken the next step in his journey by enrolling in a Certificate III course in Allied Health Assistance, moving closer to re-entering the workforce with renewed skills.

Brodie
Organisation: SMYL Community Services

Following a difficult period in his life, Brodie joined the SEE Program determined to improve his work skills to help him return to employment.
Through a supportive and flexible learning environment, Brodie found a renewed sense of purpose. He appreciated the dynamic classroom, which Brodie described as “refreshing” and unlike anything he had experienced before.

With dedication and support, Brodie successfully completed his Certificate II in Workplace Skills and has since enrolled in the Certificate III in Business.

Noeleen
Organisation: MTC FutureReady
State/Territory of training: Central Coast, NSW
Noeleen had been working as a housekeeper at a small, family-run motel when the COVID-19 lockdown changed everything. Unfortunately, she lost her job and found herself facing nearly two years of unemployment. As time passed, her confidence diminished, and she feared that, at 60 years old, she might never find work again.
Determined to turn things around, Noeleen enrolled in the SEE Program. From the start, she discovered that age was no barrier to learning new skills or gaining employment. Through working in pairs and groups Noeleen quickly gained confidence with improved communication, presentation and computer skills.
Noeleen’s renewed self-confidence helped her realise she had so much to offer. After completing the SEE Program through MTC FutureReady Gosford, Noeleen secured a role at an exclusive four-and-a-half-star resort and golf course. Now, she’s thoroughly enjoying her new housekeeping job, zipping around the resort in a golf buggy, attending to her duties, and truly enjoying work life once again.

Michael
Organisation: STEPS
State/Territory of training: Cairns, QLD
Michael, a mature-aged Torres Strait Islander man, joined the SEE Program with the goal of enhancing his employability skills. Through SEE, he gained not only valuable experience but also a renewed sense of confidence in his abilities.
During his time in the SEE Program, Michael had the unique opportunity to participate in a hands-on learning project, which was the creation of a five-meter hand-painted mural on the back wall of the STEPS campus in Cairns. This project emphasised skill development, diversity, and teamwork, providing an immersive and collaborative learning experience.
Michael played a key role in both the planning and execution of the mural. He developed a wide range of skills, including material planning, budgeting, time management, role allocation, motivation, and design layout. His dedication and leadership carried the project through to its successful unveiling and launch event. Michael said he feels...
“a sense of pride in what we achieved in a short amount of time.”
Through the SEE Program, Michael has not only expanded his skill set but also gained the confidence to pursue new opportunities. With a growing portfolio and a fresh outlook on his potential, he is excited for what the future holds.

Geneva
Organisation: Vocational Training Services
State/Territory of training: Derby, WA
Geneva, a young First Nations woman from Derby, WA, was eager to continue learning and gain qualifications to enhance her employment opportunities. After finishing school, she joined the SEE Program with the goal of developing her foundation skills, particularly in basic computer literacy.
Through hard work and determination, Geneva successfully improved her computer skills, gaining the digital knowledge she needed to pursue her career goals. However, her journey through the SEE Program offered much more than technical skills. Geneva also developed a deeper understanding of herself, growing in self-awareness and gaining insight into her strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and identity.
Since completing the SEE Program, Geneva has found employment as a Youth Support Worker in the remote community of Derby, where she now makes a positive impact on the lives of others.

Kira-lee
Organisation: Career Employment Australia
State/Territory of training: Toowoomba, QLD
Kira-lee joined the SEE Program with the goal of completing her Certificate III in Individual Support. From the very start, her experience was overwhelmingly positive.
Surrounded by supportive educators and encouraging peers, she found the learning environment to be relaxed, welcoming and uplifting. Despite the long drive from out of town, Kira-lee often looked forward to attending each day.
Having worked in aged care for several years without fully completing her qualification, Kira-lee was motivated to finish her certificate and advance her career.
Since completing her Certificate III, Kira-lee has continued her educational journey by enrolling in a Diploma of Nursing, taking a significant step toward a rewarding career in healthcare.
Kira-lee is grateful for the support and guidance she received throughout her learning experience. She is also thankful to her peers for the friendship and laughter shared along the way.
