Third-Party AI Use Case Assessments

The Third-Party AI Assessment Framework helps organisations understand and meet the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ (the department’s) expectations when applying to use artificial intelligence (AI) in the delivery of government services. The department supports responsible AI adoption and recognises its potential to improve service delivery, efficiency and outcomes. The Framework helps ensure proposed AI use is safe, secure and ethical, consistent with the department’s AI Transparency Statement.

How organisations are using AI

Approved use cases fall into 3 broad categories based on their main purpose. Some applications combine more than one purpose.

Types of AI use casesActivities and benefits
Work and administrationReduce repetitive work and help staff draft, summarise, search, process documents and prepare records.
Services and participant supportHelp staff prepare employment materials, find relevant information and provide more consistent services, with human oversight.
Insights and analysisHelp staff analyse data and identify patterns.

Assessment and application information

Applications must describe the proposed AI use and show how it will protect privacy and data, operate safely and reliably, support fair and transparent outcomes, provide appropriate staff training and human oversight, and manage cyber security risks.

Each proposed use case is subject to ethics and cyber security assessment and must align with Australia’s AI Ethics Principles, the Australian Government’s Information Security Manual and Protective Security Policy Framework. Approved use cases are incorporated into the department’s Right Fit for Risk assurance approach and ongoing accreditation lifecycle, as set out in the Third-Party AI Assessment Framework.

After submission, the department may request further information from providers or consult internally with relevant areas to confirm that the proposed use is appropriate for departmental service delivery and consistent with the department’s approach to responsible AI use at the time of assessment. Assessment timeframes may vary depending on the complexity and circumstances of the application.
