Consultation now open for the Australian Apprenticeship Priority List

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (the department) is seeking your views on possible options for the new Priority List methodology.

The Australian Apprenticeship Priority List (the Priority List) identifies occupations eligible for apprenticeship incentives provided by the Australian Government.

The current methodology determines priority based on occupation classifications by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and shortage analysis by Job and Skills Australia (JSA). The Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System (the Strategic Review) recommended revising the methodology behind the Priority List to better align with Australia’s economic and social objectives.

A discussion paper is now available and is seeking your views on proposed principles and methodology for a new Priority List. The discussion paper includes questions designed to guide your submission.

The outcomes of these consultations will help inform the development of a more robust, transparent and responsive Priority List that supports critical skills needs and delivers better outcomes for apprentices, employers and the broader economy.

Have your say on the discussion paper via the department’s Consultation Hub.

Consultation closes 5 pm AEDT, 17 October 2025.
