Lucas now spends his days helping people find a purpose and sense of belonging.
The Australian Government is working to strengthen the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system to ensure more students like Lucas have access to life-changing opportunities.
VET qualifications stand Lucas in good stead
At the age of just 17, Lucas Price began his journey to find well paid, meaningful work.
“I initially started working in building and construction as an apprentice, and quickly appreciated the value formal VET qualifications would have in helping with my career development,” said Lucas.
Lucas has now proudly completed a Certificate II in Security Operations, Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship and a Certificate IV in Community Services.
Finding his true career calling in helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
After trying his hand at a few different careers, Lucas landed a job with the Department of Justice as a Youth Justice Worker. From that point on, Lucas knew he wanted to help people find their purpose. Lucas now works at the Department of Education heading Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
“I can relate to the challenges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people face. At work we focus on providing a safe space to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people to strengthen their identity and learn about their culture and communities.”
Youth focus
Aside from Lucas’ work at the Department of Education, about a year ago he started an organisation focused on youth justice. The organisation provides cultural education to residents over 18 years old in protective housing, who can't currently function in society.
“Long-term placement helps these people learn more and strengthens their cultural identity. I also run training sessions with them once a week after work,” said Lucas.
Determined to make a difference, Lucas also provides training sessions for teachers and carers at childcare centres and primary schools, focusing on cultural heritage and a sense of belonging.
The Australian Government’s investment in the VET system through the National Skills Agreement is supporting successful careers for First Nations people and helping to close the gap through building genuine partnerships.
