Finding purpose through culture, creativity and connection.
Cameron, a proud Wotjobaluk Aboriginal man, always shared culture through art. Everything changed when his children’s kindergarten teacher invited him to run an art program.
With the support of his wife Andrea and encouragement from their community, Cameron embraced the opportunity. Together, they offered more than just art, they brought storytelling, music and dance into the classroom.
From there the business idea grew and Cameron and Andrea launched the Little Wombats Program, bringing Aboriginal cultural experiences into early learning settings.
"It was an idea I always had in my head, but I imagined someone else doing it. When the opportunity arose, I stepped in and offered something greater," Cameron said.
Turning a dream into a business
With help from Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance and support from Workforce Australia provider Holmesglen, Cameron and Andrea turned the dream into a thriving business. Today, Little Wombats is making a meaningful impact to children across Melbourne’s North-West suburbs and beyond.
Cultural in the classroom
Little Wombats delivers engaging incursions that bring Aboriginal culture directly into early learning environments. These sessions have been especially powerful for First Nations children, helping them connect with their heritage.
"It has provided the opportunity for First Nations children to learn about their culture or deepen their understanding of it. This helps keep the culture alive and growing," Cameron explained.
Support that made a difference
Cameron and Andrea credit much of their success to the Small Business Coaching and Training they received through Self-Employment Assistance. The program equipped them with tools they needed: a business plan, a mentor and access to an accountant.
"The experience was amazing. We were supported very well, and help was easy to access. We learned so much about running a business," Andrea said.
Their first year was fully booked, and they’ve already secured bookings for the second year, with plans of bringing on new staff from July.
Advice for aspiring First Nations entrepreneurs
Cameron encourages others in his community considering entrepreneurship:
“Keep on keeping on. You will face challenges, but resilience is key. Seek help from services like Holmesglen. Having a mentor, accountant, and a solid business plan is vital.”
He also recommends exploring Self-Employment Assistance:
“Do your research. Get as much support as possible and take part in Small Business Training. It can make all the difference.”
Overcoming challenges and embracing rewards
Like many small business owners, Cameron and Andrea faced early challenges, especially with cash flow and building trust. But the rewards have been worth it.
"We love the work/life balance. It helps us manage school pickups, appointments, and after-school activities. We also love that we can control our story and shape the future of our business," Cameron shared.
A legacy of learning and culture
Through Little Wombats, Cameron and Andrea are doing more than running a business – they’re nurturing a legacy. By sharing Aboriginal culture with the next generation, they’re fostering understanding, pride, and connection in communities across Melbourne.
“We wanted to make something meaningful that the kids could learn in a fun way but also learn about traditions in a respectful way,” Andrea explained.
As NAIDOC Week 2025 celebrates strength, vision, and legacy, their journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
