A new initiative designed to support First Nations people exiting the justice system to re‍-‍establish themselves in the community has commenced.

Phase 1 of the Reconnection, Employment and Learning (REAL) Program is now underway in selected correctional facilities across Australia. The REAL Program is being delivered by organisations with strong connections to First Nations communities, following extensive consultation and a competitive grant process. This approach ensures culturally safe and responsive support that helps individuals reconnect with community and access opportunities for employment and learning.

You can find out more about the consultation and grant process at Reconnection, Employment and Learning (REAL) Program.

The program will expand in late 2026, extending to additional correctional facilities as part of Phase 2. Eligible organisations will be able to apply for the next grant round when it opens.
