From business idea to community hub: Michael’s small business journey

Self-Employment Assistance – Helping small business owners grow community – Meet Michael

Learn about how Self-Employment Assistance helped Michael bring Pink Moon Records to life.

With a lifelong passion for records, CDs and cassettes, Michael was searching for support to better align his working life to his love of music.

“I decided I wanted to find a way to turn that passion into a career rather than just a hobby,” he said.

While he had the passion and vision, Michael knew he needed practical support to turn his idea into a sustainable business. That’s when he discovered Self-Employment Assistance.

Building skills and confidence

Through Self-Employment Assistance training and mentoring, Michael gained valuable knowledge in business planning, decision-making, goal setting and the realities of running a small business.

The program helped him take the leap into self-employment, while ongoing mentoring provided advice and support throughout the start-up journey.

“The program has given me the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to build Pink Moon Records and continue moving the business forward,” Michael said.

Having access to experienced mentors helped him make informed business decisions and navigate challenges as his business grew.

Turning an idea into reality

With support from the program, Michael launched Pink Moon Records, an independent record store focused on giving vinyl records, CDs and cassettes a second life.

The business sources music collections locally and imports unique records from Japan, carefully restoring and preparing them for resale. It has since grown into more than a retail store, becoming a place where customers can connect, discover new artists and share their passion for music.

“For me, Pink Moon is about more than selling records. It’s about creating opportunities, supporting local talent and building a community around music and creativity,” Michael said.

Supporting small business success

Michael’s journey shows how Self-Employment Assistance can help people turn a passion into a successful business. Through training, mentoring and practical support, the program helped him transform an idea into a thriving enterprise that contributes to the local economy and the community.
