VET activity data

The VET activity data captures vocational education and training (VET) occurring across Australia. Policy and legislation set out the information you need to provide, and what can be done with this data.

What is VET activity data?

VET activity data is information collected about vocational education and training (VET) activity across Australia.

It includes data about students, training providers, courses and training outcomes. This data is reported by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) under national requirements and is structured using agreed data standards.

VET activity data provides a consistent and reliable view of the VET system.

How is VET activity data collected?

VET activity data is collected by RTOs as part of enrolling students and delivering nationally recognised training.

RTOs are required to report this data to the national VET data system under the Data Provision Requirements, using agreed data standards:

  • Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS)
  • VET Information Standard

How is VET activity data used?

VET activity data is used to support the effective operation, oversight and improvement of Australia’s VET system. It enables:

  • students to access their training records and authenticated VET transcripts
  • training providers to plan and improve delivery
  • governments, industry and regulators to monitor performance, understand skills needs, and inform policy, funding and regulation

Data is used and shared in line with national policy and legislation, with protections in place to manage privacy and appropriate access.

RTOs are transitioning to the VET Information Standard as part of the VET Data Streamlining Program. The VET Data Streamlining (VDS) Program is the foundation of the Enhanced VET Data and Evidence initiative, aimed at enhancing the accuracy, timeliness, and security of VET activity data.
