Establishing a Cyber Security Centre of Excellence in the ACT

The Australian and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) governments are working together to establish the Cyber Security Centre of Excellence at Canberra Institute of Technology’s (CIT) Woden campus.

The $5 million joint investment will involve collaboration with government, industry, and business to enhance workforce cybersecurity.

The Centre will strengthen Australia’s sovereign cyber security capability and improve the cyber readiness of businesses and government agencies by:

  • acting as a national hub for TAFEs to provide professional learning and co-design innovative training products exploring cyber readiness in energy, utilities, and critical infrastructure
  • fast-tracking higher and degree-equivalent apprenticeship pathways and developing microcredentials for university graduates to create pathways into the cyber sector.

The Cyber Security Centre of Excellence will also collaborate with the EV Centre of Excellence to identify cyber risks in vehicles. The EV Centre of Excellence provides targeted training to support growth in the electric vehicle industry across Australia.

Background

TAFE Centres of Excellence aim to increase collaboration between TAFEs, through partnerships with employers, unions, universities and other stakeholders. They will deliver the skills people need for good, secure work and meaningful careers.

The Australian Government is investing $325 million under the 5-year National Skills Agreement to establish a network of up to 20 TAFE Centres of Excellence.

Each Centre of Excellence will focus on high skills needs to help deliver a skilled workforce for strategically important industries.
