The final report of the independent review of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act), is now available. The SRC Act is the legislative framework that underpins the Comcare workers’ compensation scheme. The independent panel were asked to consider how to improve outcomes for injured and ill workers in the scheme, while maintaining its ongoing financial viability.
The review was conducted by Ms Justine Ross as Chair and Professor Robin Creyke AO and Mr Greg Isolani as panel members. As part of the review, the panel sought submissions from the public to better understand the lived experiences of injured and ill workers and the perspectives of other stakeholders within the Comcare scheme. The panel conducted over 100 hours of stakeholder meetings, received 160 stakeholder submissions and almost 600 survey responses.
The review made 124 recommendations focussing on:
- Best practice in workers’ compensation
- Improving workers’ experiences of the scheme, including in return to work and claims management
- Scheme coverage and entitlements
- Governance and administration of the scheme
- How to reduce disputes.
The government is now considering the report and will conduct stakeholder consultations on the findings.
