Hyunjin’s small business journey: a simple idea goes international

Hyunjin shares how Self-Employment Assistance helped transform his idea into a business.

Hyunjin’s journey started somewhat unexpectedly. Being disappointed in the quality and price of printed t-shirts for his university clubs, Hyunjin started sewing and printing his own t-shirts. The positive response from other club’s customers inspired and kept him pushing forward with his business idea.

Shifting mindsets for success

Hyunjin was looking for support to help turn his idea into a legitimate business (Shirt Shapers) and found Workforce Australia Self-Employment Assistance, delivered by the Australian School of Employment.

The Self-Employment Assistance program really helped shift my mindset. I started with a simple idea, but there were so many things I didn’t know, like how to target the right customers or build relationships. I was given the right tools to get things in order and build a proper business,” Hyunjin said.

Through Self-Employment Assistance, Hyunjin gained valuable insights and tools, including access to events, masterclasses and one-on-one advice.

A highlight for Hyunjin was meeting entrepreneur, Steve Baxter, at an exclusive networking event, where Hyunjin participated in a Q&A session with other entrepreneurs. This experience provided real-world insights from someone who’s been there, done that. Hyunjin was provided a platform for connection and collaboration, helping him to build the momentum he needed to move his business forward.

“Meeting Steve Baxter was unreal! He’s been one of my personal heroes from Shark Tank. I’ve also made some amazing friends through the program,” Hyunjin said.

Moving forward

Hyunjin is continuing to grow Shirt Shapers, expanding the brand internationally using the skills and advice he’s been given.

“What began with supplying university clubs in Brisbane has turned into a nationwide operation. Now Shirt Shapers is branching out internationally. We already have clients in Thailand, South Korea, New Zealand and Brunei, with Europe next on our list!”
