Stitching Pride in every design: Jayd’s business journey

Self-Employment Assistance — Helping small business owners develop skills and connections — Meet Jayd

Jayd shares how their one-of-a-kind designs are showcasing fashion without boundaries.

Jayd is the creative mind behind Nuu Sew, an eclectic slow fashion label inspired by Japanese culture and street fashion. What started as an Instagram page sharing Jayd’s sewing projects and creative experiments, Nuu Sew has slowly grown into something more impactful.

A turning point came during a trip to Japan, where Jayd visited a cat temple known for blessing new entrepreneurs. After making an offering and praying for success, Jayd returned home inspired to rebrand as Nuu Sew, blending Shinto values with modern J-fashion influences.

Finding support and structure

When Jayd lost their previous job, they discovered Workforce Australia's Self-Employment Assistance, delivered by the Australian School of Employment.

Before joining Self-Employment Assistance, Jayd struggled to turn ideas into an actionable plan. Being supported to complete a business plan helped to define Nuu Sew's goals and future direction. With hands-on guidance, Jayd’s confidence grew as she transformed a creative hobby into a viable business, and a brand identity rooted in inclusivity, cultural diversity and creativity.

“When I applied for Self-Employment Assistance, things started to change. I got more done in the first month, just by filling out my business plan, than I had managed on my own before,” Jayd said.

Fashion without boundaries

Nuu Sew captures the vibrant spirit of Sydney's Mardi Gras by celebrating individuality and creative freedom. Jayd's designs challenge fashion norms, proving that clothing has no gender.

"I hope my brand shows people that anyone can express themselves through fashion without shame and judgement," Jayd said.

Each piece Jayd creates is one of a kind, drawing inspiration from Japanese subculture and using materials sourced from op shops and deadstock suppliers. Jayd's goal is to see one of their designs worn by a drag performer, fulfilling a dream inspired by The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

What's next?

Growth is on the horizon, but Jayd is committed to staying true to their values. Upcoming collections will blend J-fashion influences with everyday wear, so anyone can feel confident and seen, regardless of gender identity.
