A life altering accident led Kurt into a career helping others.
The Australian Government is committed to building and supporting a Vocational Education and Training (VET) system that improves opportunities for all Australians to reskill and transform their careers, just like Kurt Decker did.
From tragedy...
On a beautiful winter’s day, Kurt went for a routine bicycle ride. Shortly after turning onto the bicycle path, he hit the ground, rendering him unconscious. Kurt was transferred to hospital where he spent one month undergoing a series of surgeries.
Once Kurt was out of hospital, he still had a long road to recovery, spending an additional two months in an acute rehab centre and a further six months with a community physiotherapist.
...to triumph
Prior to the accident Kurt was working as an Account and News Desk Executive with a media monitoring business. However, after experiencing and seeing the rewarding work done at the rehab centre, he started to reevaluate his career path.
Kurt’s career transition:
Kurt investigated options related to physiotherapy and occupational therapy in the high-demand Health Care sector, but didn’t feel ready to commit to a four-year degree course.
“After researching what VET courses would best suit my needs, I signed up to do a Fee-Free TAFE Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance at Box Hill Institute at the end of February 2024,” said Kurt.
At the end of September 2024, Kurt started his 120 hours of placement and was fortunate to be placed at a well-regarded hospital.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with staff and helping with physio and occupational therapy programs. Simple acts of showing patients how to use equipment and make a cup of tea were major steps forward for some people," said Kurt.
Kurt completed the course within eight months in October 2024 and is now working at a hospital in an Allied Health Assistant, Physiotherapy role where he is incredibly happy.
"I love seeing people get back on track and smash it after diligently exercising and working on their physical recovery," he said.
Kurt is now back on his bike and his physical health is back to 100%.
Dedicating time to VET studies and putting theory into practice during work placements certainly has paid dividends for Kurt in finding a role in his new chosen career path.
The Australian Government’s investment in the VET system through the National Skills Agreement is supporting more Australians to achieve success and provide the skills Australia needs now and for the future.
