VET School-based Traineeship makes things happen

National Skills Agreement — Vet Pathways — Meet Aleira – School-based training

Aleira springboards her career with three VET qualifications.

The Australian Government is committed to building and supporting a Vocational Education and Training (VET) system that improves opportunities for all Australians to build their careers, just like Aleira Chalker.

Achieving goals

Whilst in high school, Aleira undertook a School-based Traineeship to follow her career goals to work in an office and interact with communities.

Completing a Certificate II in Workplace Skills and a Certificate III in Business while at school, led to her completing a Certificate IV in Business in a workplace environment.

“Studying a Certificate III in Business and a Certificate IV in Business is the best decision I’ve ever made. I learnt to do so many things in a better way,” Aleira said.

Creating better work opportunities, faster

Today, Aleira is an administrative officer for the Engineering Services Division at a Tasmanian Council.

Learnings from her VET units come to the fore in everyday conversations with colleagues, as well as documenting, collecting and recording data.

“I can apply what I learnt in my VET studies at work every day. I regularly revisit units I learnt during my training” Aleira said.

Aleira also finds a result of her training is that she is able to learn new processes quicker and uses initiative without being prompted.

“Successfully applying my VET learnings at work has made me more productive, more quickly and has had a tremendous positive affect on my confidence.”

Typical workday

A typical workday for Aleira includes:

  • attending meetings
  • managing a tick sheet, recording who is in the office and which jobs the Engineering Team members are working on
  • providing the community with support, including running permits for food trucks and skip bins
  • checking drainage, road entrances and making people aware of upcoming roadworks.

Future plans

At the moment, Aleira’s role is mostly internally focused, although in the longer term she’d like to work more directly with communities, possibly in human resources.

Dedicating time to VET studies and putting theory into practice at work has certainly helped Aleira in finding a career path she enjoys.

“Although I have only been working for the council for a short time, my VET studies have helped me undertake tasks more efficiently and effectively,” Aleira said.

The Australian Government’s investment in the VET system through the National Skills Agreement is supporting more Australians to achieve success and provide the skills Australia needs now and for the future.
