When confidence meets opportunity: Selin’s career leap with EST

From casual work to a confident step forward in hospitality, Selin’s journey shows how the right support and training can help people recognise their potential and take a meaningful leap in their career.

Casual to clear direction

After completing her Higher School Certificate, Selin gained experience through casual roles in a restaurant and cinema. While these jobs helped her build practical skills, Selin wanted greater stability and a clearer career pathway in hospitality.

Building confidence and job readiness

Through the Employability Skills Training (EST) program, Selin completed targeted training and received personalised support to prepare for work in hospitality. She strengthened her communication and customer service skills, worked with her trainer to recognise her strengths, and built the confidence needed to move beyond casual work and pursue more stable employment.

A key milestone was completing her Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certification, providing the essential qualification required to progress in the hospitality industry. Through EST, she continued training to further develop her job readiness and communication skills.

Stepping up to opportunity

As Selin’s confidence grew, so did her willingness to pursue new opportunities. Her trainer connected her with a local employer, and she was offered an interview at a hotel. This marked a significant step forward – an opportunity to put her progress into action. She impressed the employer during both the interview and a trial shift, demonstrating professionalism, a positive attitude and strong willingness to learn. She was offered the role on the spot.

A new chapter

“Completing my RSA and the EST program gave me the skills I needed to actually feel ready for work. Before joining the program, I didn’t feel very confident, but my trainer helped me realise what I’m capable of.”

Today, Selin is thriving in her role and taking pride in how far she has come. Her story shows how the right training and support can help turn casual work into a more stable job.
