Best practice workers’ compensation principles for workers with silicosis and related diseases

In July 2025, the Heads of Workers' Compensation Authorities’ (HWCA) Dust Diseases Working Group finalised the Best practice workers’ compensation principles for workers with silicosis and related diseases (the Principles).

In March 2022, Work Health and Safety Ministers requested HWCA develop best practice principles as part of the All of Governments' response to the National Dust Disease Taskforce final report (recommendation 4).

The Principles were developed to promote a more consistent approach to support workers and their families adversely affected by silica-related diseases, while recognising the differences between workers’ compensation arrangements in each jurisdiction.

The Principles encompass worker, process and scheme design-related principles, and reflect HWCA’s recognition that all workers have the right to a healthy and safe working environment.
