Finding stable work can be difficult, even for people with years of experience. Thomas’ story shows how Employability Skills Training (EST) helped him turn that experience into secure employment.
Skilled, capable, and still searching
Thomas is a skilled technician with experience in belt splicing, forklift driving and warehouse operations. He has worked in physically demanding roles for major industrial clients, developing a strong work ethic, adaptability and practical problem-solving skills.
Despite this extensive experience, Thomas found it challenging to secure stable employment. While looking for ways to improve his job search approach, he enrolled in the EST program.
Strengthening job readiness
Through EST, Thomas received practical support focused on the realities of the current job market. With guidance from his trainer, he improved his resume, wrote targeted cover letters and prepared for interviews.
His trainer also supported him to identify suitable opportunities to pursue and helped him navigate the application process. When a forklift driving vacancy became available, Thomas received help to apply, prepare for the interview and complete reference checks.
“I’m grateful for the support I received. The EST course helped me understand what employers are looking for, and my trainer’s guidance made all the difference. This course also helped me create a direct connection with the employer and that, I feel, was the most important thing”.
Achieving a positive employment outcome
With the skills and support gained through EST, Thomas secured a role as a Forklift Operator/Warehouse Store Person. The position allows him to apply his existing experience in a more stable work setting and marks his shift from job searching into secure employment.
