About the Murra Program
The Murra Program is a pilot initiative designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students, providing meaningful career development and pathway opportunities with the Australian Public Service (APS). Through the program:
- Students are offered a choice of flexible, non-ongoing paid roles complementing their study commitments.
- Students gain knowledge and practical experience, build professional skills and create lifelong connections through learning and development activities, mentors and networks.
- The program duration can be between 3-18 months, with opportunities across a range of work areas in DEWR.
What does the Murra Program offer?
Tailored positions
Students are given the opportunity to choose their preferred position from a list of roles within DEWR which best align with their interests and career goals.
Streamlined processes
No written application process, just express your interest below to meet informally with business areas to discuss available opportunities.
Flexibility and great working conditions
Access a flexible work schedule to complement your study commitments as well as cultural leave.
Meaningful relationships
Connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander career mentors from the department’s First Nations Employee Network.
Infrastructure and supports
Gain access to customised information sessions to develop your skills and help you apply for permanent roles in the APS.
Who is this program for?
We’re looking for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tertiary students, currently studying in any year at the Australian National University or the University of Canberra who want hands-on experience, real connections and a pathway to opportunities in the APS and beyond.
No prerequisite skills or experience required to join the program. However, participants will get the most out of this program with:
- Curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to upholding APS values in your work
- Active participation in networking and learning opportunities
- A desire to explore career insights and development opportunities
- Willingness to embrace opportunities to connect with other students and DEWR employees
- Motivation and a problem-solving mindset.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Murra Program, you must:
- Be an Australian Citizen
- Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- Be willing to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance
- Be currently studying at the Australian National University or University of Canberra in any year (Please contact Murra.Program@dewr.gov.au if you are not currently studying at a partnered university).
